DISPERSIBLE
OR BLOOMING BATH OILS
Composition and
Function:
Dispersible bath oils
consist of emollient oils and perfume oils, and
contain a surfactant selected to emulsify the
oils into the water instead of making them spread
on the surface. When poured into the bath water,
they bloom into a milky cloud. They are sometimes
preferred to the floating type because the oils
are dispersed uniformly throughout the bath
water, providing through contact with the body
during the bath. When properly formulated, they
leave very little oily slickness or ring in the
tub after the water is drained.
The perfumes in such
products are generally used at concentrations of
5% to 10%, although higher levels are sometimes
used. In modern formulating work, the emollient
oils are likely to be mineral or synthetic oils.
Sulfonated vegetable oils have also been used,
not only to supply emollience, but also to
contribute some dispersing action.
