ACS in San Diego

by Derk Huibers for the Surfactants Virtual Library, February 2001

On April 1-5, 2001, the American Chemical Society will meet in San Diego, California. From personal observation during the 1996 chemical engineering world congress, I must say that the Chemists could not have picked a better spot.

Now there is an opportunity for all surfactant scientists to enjoy this beautiful part of the world by hearing a paper on a subject dear to your heart. Even you favorite technician can be there to listen to “Technician Education in the 21st Century” (contact cjmurphy@dow.com).

Self-Organization of Amphiphiles & Colloids will be the focus of P. Alexandridis (palexand@eng.buffalo.edu) and N.L. Abbott (abbott@engr.wisc.edu).

Surfactants in Biological Systems will the interest of J.H. Hoh (jhoh@jhmi.edu) and J. Wong (jywong@bu.edu).

M. Lieberman (mlieberm@nd.edu) will lead a session on Surfactants in Electronic Devices.

Contact P.T. Hammond (hammond@mit.edu) for Macromolecular Self-Assembly at Surfaces and Interfaces.

B. Zhou of Hydrocarbon Technologies in Lawrenceville, NJ will chair a session on Nanotechnology in Catalysis (zhou@htinj.com) and L.R. Sita (is214@umail.umd.edu) on Functional Nanostructures.

In Petroleum Chemistry chaired by J.B. Kimble of Phillips Petroleum in Bartlesville OK (jbkimbl@ppco.com), there is a section on “Surfactive” Agents, Corrosion Inhibitors and Demulsifiers.

All these symposia have been organized, but there always will be cancellations and substitutions until the actual meeting. Therefore, I suggest that you contact the program chairs, if you think that you can make an important contribution.
