The 220th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society

The 220th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society will take place in Washington DC from August 19-24, 2000 and as usual surfactant and colloid chemists will be well represented.

For example, on Monday August 21 at 4:45 pm , Dr. Cynthia Friend of Harvard University will deliver the Eminent Scientist Lecture in the Ballroom of Hotel Washington. She will discuss the role of surface chemistry in technologies such as the fabrication of optical and electronic devices.

Prior to that, in the afternoon, there will be a symposium on Green Chemistry: Applications in Academia and Industry in the Renaissance. This symposium continuous through Thursday and includes papers like “Use of hydrophobic molecular sieves for the adsorption of CVOCs from water” by A, Xhaja.

Even before that in the morning in the Renaissance, there is a symposium on functional nano-structures in molecular electronics, where, among others, T.J. Marks speaks about “Nanoscale self-assembly routes to optically functional thin films and L.R. Sita about “Mediating electron transfer with self-assembled monolayers” among others. We also should mention a presentation in the afternoon: “Controlling interfacial interactions at the subnanometer scale” by T.R. Lee.

Another significant symposium on Advanced Materials and Nano-technology runs for four days in the Renaissance with lectures such as “Nano-structure Pd catalyst for hydrogen peroxide formation” by B. Zhou, T.L.K. Lee and A.G. Comolli of Hydrocarbon Technology Inc., a process research organization in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. They are ready to scale-up this process. Activated hydrogen peroxide can be applied to oxidize paper and textile effluents, as presented in a green chemistry paper by T.J. Collins, who has no less than 14 co-authors. This must be an ACS record.

A large number of seminars and symposia is sponsored by the Division of Colloid & Surface Chemistry in the JW Marriott Hotel. Of particular interest are the meetings on “Microbial Biofilm Formation” and “Micro-emulsions: Properties and Aplications” where T.Alan Hatton will present  “Structure and dynamics of AOT/nonionic co-surfactant micro-emulsions’. On Monday Evening there will be a giant  poster session in the Grand Hyatt, organized by A.P. Gast. In the section  on Micelles, Micro-emulsions and other Self-assembled structures there is an interesting poster by L.R.Procell on “Molybdate/peroxide oxidation of mustard in micro-emulsions” In the section on Nano-materials, you will find a poster by J.W. Stouwdam  on “Self-assembly of nano-particles”.

A detailed program of the several thousand papers was published in Chemical & Engineering News of July 24, 2000, showing the enormous resourcefulness of thousands of chemists in examining and applying chemistry for the benefit of mankind.
